Search Engine Optimization

Three giant eagles soaring over a molten volcanic wasteland

SEO (or Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your website easier to find and read for search engines such as Google, Yelp, and Bing. Good SEO means you show up higher in search results. Bad SEO means it’ll be just as hard to find you in web searches as it was for the eagles in the Return of the King to find Frodo and Sam on Mount Doom. That’s why ArkenSites builds every website with SEO in mind from the start. Instead of relying on a website to assemble its content after someone visits, our sites are built with the actual page content already in place. Your headlines, paragraphs, page titles, and descriptions are all there when the page goes live, making it easier for search engines to read and understand what your business offers. When your content needs to change, you tell us, and we update and rebuild the site for you to help you rank as well as possible when searched.

Why It’s Important

Getting Found

Most people search for a local business by pulling out their phone, typing in what they need, and choosing from the businesses that show up on the first page of results. You can have great products, friendly service, and competitive prices, but none of that helps if potential customers can’t find you. SEO helps your website appear in the search results when people are looking for the products or services you provide.

Being Readable

When a user visits a page on a website, typically the website sends the search engine a nearly empty page with a set of instructions to assemble the page once it lands. While the user may not notice this because it happens so fast, search engines are less forgiving. Search engines need to be able to read and understand your website the moment they see the page, and the more they have to work the worse you’ll rank in search results. ArkenSites builds pages with the important content already in place. That means your headlines, information, and page content are readily available for search engines to read and understand.

Your Search Result

When your business appears in a search, people typically see a headline and a short description underneath it for the page they’re going to click on. That description is often the deciding factor in whether they click your website or move on to another result. Instead of leaving those details up to a search engine to figure out, we create page titles and descriptions specifically for your website. Each page can tell potential customers exactly what they’ll find when they click.

One Address

A website can sometimes have multiple versions of the same page address. For example, a search engine could see yoursite.com/services, yoursite.com/services/, and www.yoursite.com/services as different versions of the same page. Having multiple versions of the same page can spread your website’s search authority across those different addresses, diluting how high that page could potentially rank. ArkenSites makes sure each page has one preferred address, while the other versions point back to it. This keeps your website organized and helps search engines understand which version they should use.

Page Weight

The larger a webpage is, the more information a visitor has to download before they can use it. That’s especially important for customers browsing on a phone or dealing with a slower internet connection. We keep our pages lean by removing unnecessary code and resources wherever possible. The result is a website that’s easier to load for your visitors and easier for search engines to work through. Keeping things lightweight can make a noticeable difference in how quickly your site loads.

Features of SEO

Prerendering

Before your website goes live, our system builds every page into a finished HTML page that can be delivered directly to site visitors and search engines. That means the important content isn’t waiting to be assembled after the page loads. Your actual text, headlines, and other page information are already there. And when you need to make a change, we update the content and rebuild the site so the finished pages stay current.

Structured Data

Search engines don’t just read the words on your website. They also look for information that helps them understand what those words mean. ArkenSites automatically creates structured data that tells search engines important information about your business and your pages. This can include your business details and address, contact information, and the structure of your website’s pages. You don’t have to write or maintain this code yourself. It’s generated from the information already on your website and updated whenever your content changes.

Sitemaps & Robots

A sitemap is the list of pages you hand a search engine so it can find its way around your website. Your robots file provides additional instructions about which parts of your website search engines should and shouldn’t access. With ArkenSites, both are automatically generated and kept up to date. When we add, change, or remove a page, your sitemap and robots file are updated along with it. We also keep track of when pages were last updated and organize them based on their importance, with your homepage receiving the highest priority. Sections without published content aren’t included until they’re ready.

Our Process

Writing

Before your website goes live, we go through it and create a title and description for each page. These are the pieces of information that potential customers see in search results before they ever visit your website, so we make them clear, useful, and relevant to the page. Each one is reviewed by a real person who can approve it, make changes, or rewrite it when necessary. If something is left blank, our system can provide a sensible fallback so you don’t end up with an incomplete search result. We also keep descriptions at an appropriate length so they don’t get awkwardly cut off in search results.

Building

Once the content is ready, our build process takes care of the technical work. Every page is opened in a real browser and built into a finished HTML page. Structured data is generated from the page content, your sitemap and robots file are created, and unnecessary resources are removed to keep the site lightweight. Rebuilding an entire website typically takes only about 20–60 seconds.

Checking

Finally, we don’t simply assume everything worked because the build completed successfully. We check the finished pages to make sure the content actually made it onto the site and everything is working as expected. That’s an important difference between simply having SEO features and actually taking responsibility for how the finished website performs.
